Groundbreaking Celebration Held Today for New Kirkland Museum
Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art proudly announces that ground was broken today for a new museum at 12th and Bannock in Denver's Golden Triangle Museum District. The new 38,500 square foot museum, designed by Seattle-based Olson Kundig, is anticipated to open in 2017. Vance Kirkland's 1910-1911 Art School & Studio building is the heart of the Kirkland Museum experience and will be relocated to Bannock Street and oriented in the same direction. Kirkland Museum will remain open at the current Capitol Hill location until spring of 2016.
Over 450 people joined Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock as he participated in the groundbreaking ceremony, with additional remarks made by Hugh Grant, Kirkland Museum Founding Director & Curator; Merle Chambers, Chambers Family Fund Founder and President; Tom Noel (Dr. Colorado), Author and Professor of History at University of Colorado Denver, and Architect Jim Olson, FAIA, Principal, Olson Kundig. In honor of the signature Dot Paintings of Colorado artist and museum namesake Vance Kirkland (1904-1981), guests were invited to paint a dot of their own on a canvas banner to celebrate the groundbreaking.
