What's the difference between vintage and antique?
This is a question that is important to us at Modernism.com because our dealers use these words often. We are here to clear up any confusion!
The simple definitions:
VINTAGE: The word VINTAGE describes an item that is at least 20 years+ old.
ANTIQUE: The word ANTIQUE describes an item that is 100 years old or older.
Examples:
- A 1960s George Nelson Executive Desk by Herman Miller is VINTAGE.
- A 1820s Gilt Bronze Mantle Clock is ANTIQUE.
- An Art Deco Chair from 1925 is VINTAGE, but in 2025 will become an ANTIQUE.
- Any item made in 1916 or earlier is ANTIQUE.
- Any item made between 1917 and 1996 is VINTAGE.
