Louise Nevelson

Louise Nevelson began to attract attention with her innovative work in the early 1940's.  In the 1950's museums began to acquire her work.  She was Born on September 23, 1899, in Kiev, Russia and soon after her family moved to the United States where she grew up in Maine.   In 1933 she traveled to Germany and studied Cubist art with Hans Hofmann and later at the Art Students League in New York City where other Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock were studying as well.  In the 1940s, Nevelson experimented with different styles and materials such as wood and junk that she found in the streets of New York. She began working with monochrome paint, particularly black, and assembled the sculpture pieces in groupings. Nevelson created works that exemplified the Modernist Style.  She continued working well into her 80's acheiving great success.   Nevelson died in New York City in 1988.
