Louise Nevelson began to attract attention with her innovative work in the early 1940's. In the 1950's museums began to acquire her work. She was Born on September 23, 1899, in Kiev, Russia and soon after her family moved to the United States where she grew up in Maine. In 1933 she traveled to Germany and studied Cubist art with Hans Hofmann and later at the Art Students League in New York City where other Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock were studying as well.
