Description

Louise Nevelson, (The Great Wall,) Lead intaglio on very heavy paper. This very large piece (image 27 1/2 in x 22 in, frame 40 in x 34 3/4 in.) makes a dramatic statement on any wall. Ms. Nevelson (born in 1989 and died in 1988) was an American sculptor, painter and print maker. She is, perhaps, best known for her monumental, monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Born in Czarist Russia, she emigrated with her family to the United States in the early 20th century. After attending art classes at the Art Students League of New York, she had here first solo exhibition in 1941. A student of Hans Hofmann and Chaim Gross, Nevelson experimented with early conceptual art sing found objects, painted and made prints before dedicating her herself primarialy to sculpture. She usually created her sculptures out of wood that appeared puzzle-like, with multiple intricately cut pieces placed into wall sculptures or independently standing pieces, often 3-D. A unique feature of her work is that her figures are often painted in monochromatic black or white. This work (The Great Wall) is similar, as she adhered a series of heavily embossed lead plates to very heavy paper which gives the piece three dimensionality like her sculpture. A figure in the international art scene, Nevelson was showcased at the 31st Venice Biennale. Her work is seen in major museums and corporate collections world wide. She remains one of the most important figures in 20th-century American sculpture and art.
