Design Miami is the annual design convention that takes place from December 5-9 along with Art Basel in Miami Beach. The Convention has flooded the design district with enthusiasts from around the world. The sheer amount of art and design is a lot to take in and often times the big picture of the event as a whole takes time to sink in. This year many are focusing on seeking ideas and collaborations outside of their usual creative disciplines.
Design Miami, founded in 2005, features 35 international design galleries showing exquisite pieces (some of the furniture is on this website). One of the growing trends this year is the blur between the creative disciplines. The talk given by Diane von Furstenberg made this clear
Wearing a Tara dress from her Resort 2013 collection, Diane von Furstenberg, Belgium-born designer, visited Miami for her first time to speak as one of the fair's “Design Pioneers”. The hour long event was moderated by Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of "W" magazine. Tonchi started the event off by listing some of Ms. Von Furstenberg’s greatest accomplishments, most notably, her 70s era wrap dresses. Ms. Von Furstenberg then gave us some of her insights: “I am an explorer…I love life so much and I love to discover. It doesn’t matter where I go, I like to go”. Her talk pushed the focus of the fair away from collectible, industrial design and gave a fresh perspective to the listeners. It also ran parallel with the trending idea of designers crossing over into other disciplines, and designers themselves drawing inspiration and creative ideas for their process from other disciplines. After the discussion, von Furstenberg greeted guests on stage to sign copies of Camilla Morton’s book, “Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress’s New Clothes.”
