History And Characteristics Of The Art Deco Style

Art Deco made its signature mark during the 1920s and early 1930s. The style occurred against the backdrop of the Roaring ‘20s in America and recovering Europe on the mend from World War One. It gained popularity once again in the 1960s and then again in the 1980s. The Art Deco style can be found in fashion, architecture, furniture, and art throughout the US and the world. Great examples of Art Deco buildings are New York’s Chrysler Building and Radio City Music Hall. The tropical Art Deco style can be seen in the Art Deco Historic District in Miami Beach, Florida.

The Art Deco style features beautiful touches of French, Egyptian, and Mediterranean culture. Formative influences also included the geometric forms of Cubism, machine-style forms of Constructivism and Futurism, intense colors of Parisian Fauvism, and Aztec and Egyptian art.

Art Deco design makes a bold statement with its old-school swagger and compelling glamour. It is a sophisticated elegance with an air of luxury. Art Deco is considered to be very glamourous, elegant, functional, and modern. As described by Brian J.R. Blench in the Spring issue of the Art Deco Society of New York’s newsletter in 1985, it is “for luxury and leisure, for comfort and conviviality. It is an exciting style and should, like the archetypal drink of the period, the cocktail, be enjoyed whiled it is still laughing at you.”
