AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART IN NICE - FRANCE
This work, "Picasso Mowing" is part of Elliott Arkin's Exhibit , A Peaceable Kingdom, which began in 2004 and titled after the American painting by Edward Hicks, follows in the series of work Arkin created as cartoonist-in-residence on what was the preeminent art world website, Artnet.com, beginning in the late 1990's. Arkin would develop his satires on art world events into unique sculptural pieces whose metaphors and interpretations took on broader conceptual ideas and themes. As with many of these works, Arkin's use of artists as gardening lawn gnomes can have many implications. They can relate to artists as caretakers of space, planting ideas and doing the work that shapes our world. They can also playfully comment on the artist/ patron relationship and thus be a satire on the art marketplace as well. In typical form of this series of works, Arkin mixes and matches references to artists and artworks creating a quizzical journey with many paths and interpretations.
