"Composition" by Janos Martinsky, oil on canvas, (16 1/8in x 11 1/2in). Janos Martinsky was born in Hungary in 1909 and died in 1949 from typhoid fever. He was educated at István Szőnyi's independent school and at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts as a student of István Bosznay and Gyula Rudnay. In 1936 he moved to Mohács as an art teacher and from that time on he enriched the cultural life of that town with art-related lectures and exhibitions. Between 1947 and 1949 he taught art history at the Grammar School of Mohács. He also tried his skills in Gobelin design and etching. He presented his works at exhibitions in Mohács and Pécs (1942) and at the first group exhibition of 'Abstract Art' (1946). Around the mid-40s he painted abstract pictures. This wonderful painting is from Martinsky's abstract period.
