Poul Volther was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on January 2, 1923 and died on January 23, 2001. He studied design at the Arts and Crafts School in Copenhagen. As a teacher at Denmark's Design School, he encouraged hundreds of students to aim for high quality craftsmanship. From 1949 he was employed by the cooperative FDB at Hans Wegner's recommendation and working in their the design studio under the leadship of Børge Mogensen. When Mogensen left in 1959, Volther took Mogensen's place. The Corona chair design was born by a desire to economize on materials after WWII.
