We are offering 9 separate woodcut images from a rare 1937 portfolio, "A GIFT TO BIRO-BIDGAN:1937 CHICAGO From Despair to New Hope." The portfolio comprised 14 woodblock prints in an edition of 200-though it has been speculated that fewer were actually produced. This portfolio is numbered 32 of 200. Each image will be sold separately. Originally the prints were matted with a thin paper mat with author and title printed on it. We have removed the prints from the mats and inserted the mats into a sleeve on the back of the frames for protection.
First is Mitchell Siporin's (1910-1976) "WORKER'S FAMILY". This image shows a depression era scene of a family in front of an industrial urban landscape. It is a social realist image that uses the medium of woodcut to creat a dazzling contrast between the illuminated human figures and the dark buildings behind them.
