Gilbert Rohde designed these two pieces as part of his SMARTSET line for the Kroehler Furniture Company, Chicago, Illinois. the line was introduced in 1935 and was aimed at the moderately priced modern market. This set cosnists of a chest with four drawers and a door that opens to reveal shelves. The companion piece has shelves and a door. they have the Kroehler black on brass tag and a silver metal tag that reads: "Smartset, Adapted to the Spirit and the Living Needs of our Age". Each piece is 40" wide x 17" deep and 37" high.
