1937 original woodcut from the rare portfolio, "A GIFT TO BIRO-BIJAN: CHICAGO 1937...From Dispair To New Hope". The portfolio comprised of 14 woodblocks prints mounted on with a thin paper mat that haS the title and artist's name printed on it. Because of the acid paper used at the time, we have removed the mat and stored it in a sleeve on the back of the frame. Prints are in excellent condition with no foxing.
AARON BOHROD (1907-1992) shows an old man carrying a bag of belongings on his back. The background shows a run down automobile as well as the urban landscape of apartment buildings with wooden porches at the back of the houses and water towers in the background, typical of Chicago's West Side. The symbolic interpretations of a figure carrying a sack suggest refuge, poverty, wandering of dispair, which correspond to the reality of life in Chicago during the Depression.
