Description

Vladimir Lebedev, "Homme Cubique" (Cubic Man). Ink, porchoir and gouache on paper. Excellent condition, no signs of foxing, light or age staining to the print. Not examined out of the frame. 9 1/2 in. x 7 in. image, 17 in. x 13 in. frame. Russian painter, print maker, poster artist and illustrator (1891--1967), his most original period belongs to the 15 years after the October Revolution of 1917. He was at the forefront revolutionary posters that used the forms of lubok folk prints for propaganda effect. In his posters he developed the earlier Neo-primitivism of Vladimir Tatlin and Kazimir Malevich into a distinctive laconic formal composition marked by decorative and rhythmical contrasts of simple blocks of colored form and text. Lebedev experimented with the abstract forms in his painting with the abstract forms created by faceted planes in Cubism and Futurism, as in "Woman Ironing" (1920) and "Cubism" (1922).
