Description

George Rouault "Arise, You Who are Dead!" 1927, etching, aquatint and heliogravure on paper. Very good condition, minor mat staining that does not show when matted, a richly inked impression. (27in. x 20 1/8in. image, 29 5/8in. x 23in. sheet) This print is one of the "War" series. In this series he appropriates the skeletal figure who rampaged through so many morality plays of the late middle ages. By re-employing this fell figure for his own purposes in the "War" prints Roualt implies that the conflict that assailed the same geographical area between 1914 and 1918 was just as devastating in its consequences. Georges Rouault (1871-1958), was a French painter and graphic artist. His first one-man show took place in Paris in 1910. Rouault developed a new and complex technique in his graphic work and worked in etching, wood engraving, and color. Between 1940 and 1956 large restrospective exhibitions of Rouault's work took place in many European and American museums and even in Japan. He died in Paris on Feb. 13, 1958, and was given a state funeral.
