Description

Gilbert Rohde (1894 – 1944) designed this sculptural and advanced form dining table for the Herman Miller Furniture Company, Zeeland, Michigan. The table is from the Paldao Group introduced in the Fall of 1940. The table top is of Paldao veneers (Paldao is a Philippine hard wood) with an inlaid “sine” curve of lighter wood. The table top opens in the center to introduce two matching leaves. The top is finished in a natural color Rohde named “Beaver”. Faceted legs in a darker stain slant inward from each corner to a base of “Leather Cloth” (specified by Rohde to be “Ashers Boretz # 302 – Brown) held in place by 5/16” antique brass tacks. The rounded corners and gently undulating sides and ends on the top and base mark the first introduction of biomorphic design in American furniture. The table is 40” wide, 68” long (96” long when the two 14” leaves are inserted) and 29 ¾” high.
