Johnny Friedlaender

Johnny Friedlaender was born on June 21, 1912 in what was then Silesia but now Poland.  Those were difficult times and in 1921 the family moved to Breslau (now Wroclaw) in Silesia.  His father was a Pharmacist.  In 1922 Johnny graduated from high school in Wroclaw and was admitted to the Wroclaw Academy of Arts where he studied under Otto Mueller ( one of the early members of the Die Brucke expressionist movement which had a major impact on the evolution of modern art in the 20th Century and the creation of Expressionism).

Roberto Matta

Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren , better known as Roberto Matta, was one of Chile's best-known painters and a seminal figure in 20th century abstract expressionist and surrealist art.

 

Paul Follot

Paul Follot,  was a French designer of luxury furniture and decorative art objects before World War I (1914–18). He was one of the leaders of the Art Deco movement, and had huge influence in France and elsewhere. After the war he became head of the Pomone decorative art workshop of Le Bon Marché department store, making affordable but still elegant and high-quality work.

 

Jerry Roth

Jerry Roth (1918 – 2008) had his first paying job as an artist in the new York Federal Arts program of the WPA at age 16. He remained as artist until his death 74 years later. Born Jerome Rothstein, at four his parents give him the middle name “Henry” and later he became Jerry Roth. His watercolor of a boxer is from the 1930’s and is signed on the lower left in pencil “Rothstein” The piece is 17 ½” tall and 11 ¾” wide. This and the other pictures by Jerry are from his widow Nettie.

There is an Art Deco Jewel in Ormond Beach.   The "31 Supper Club" at 31 West Granada Boulevard is a must see!   Created in the best Art Deco tradition, the interior has actual period pieces by Wolfgang Hoffmann, Gilbert Rohde, Paul Frankl and many other great designers of the period.  The blue-neon enhanced bar is from the 1930's.
