June Wayne was born in 1918 in Chicago. A bored student she left high school at 16.
Early in life, she recognized that the pixels of color in comic strips, when merged with vision, produced different colors. Her early work used technique of pointillism to make images, a similar to the works of Seurat and Signac.
Her painting career began with her participation in the WPA Art Project during the depression. By 1950 she was working virtually full time as an artist. By the time she established a studio in Los Angeles in 1958, she was one of the most respected artists in the United States. In 1952, she was named Woman of the Year the Year for Meritorious Achievement in Modern Art by the Los Angeles Times. By this point in her career she had works in the major collections in the United States. Worried about the near death condition of lithography in this country, she wrote a proposal to the Ford Foundation in 1959 requesting support to restore lithography by training master printers to work with U.S. artists. All told she raised $1,265,000 to fund her project.
Under her direction, Tamarind Lithography Workshop became one of the most important training programs for the revival of printmaking in the United States. In 1969, she transferred Tamarind to the University of New Mexico, where she was joined by Clinton Adams, artist and Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico to establish Tamarind as a world class trainer of lithography printers who collaborated with some of the finest artists in the world. Tamarind is still producing master printers.
She continually created new techniques and forms. Her art was stimulated by discoveries in modern science, especially space exploration, the intellectual excitement of which drove Ms. Wayne to remain one of the most innovative artists of her day. Her work was influenced by expressionism, abstraction and surrealism.
