Edna Hibel

Edna Hibel was born in 1917 in Boston, Mass.  She started painting at the age of 9 when, according to her son, the teacher gave her paper and colors to distract her from math as she was better than the other children and it frustrated them.
She spent many summers in the shore in Massachusetts and Maine studying watercolor painting and eventually graduating from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in 1939.   In 1942 she received the Sturtevant Traveling Fellowship to study in Mexico.

BEST: The extensive descriptions often include information on previous owners. That handsome 1930s settee somehow looks even more attractive once you know that it belonged to George Gershwin.

Henry Faulkner

Henry Lawrence Faulkner: artist, poet, rebel, bohemian.
Faulkner’s life story begins in 1924 Appalachia—he claimed to be born in Egypt, Kentucky, although records place his birth several counties away—where he was orphaned along with ten brothers and sisters upon his mother’s death in 1926—his declaration as a poor cousin to the famous Faulkner of Mississippi has always gone unsubstantiated. His early childhood was spent in a Louisville, Kentucky children’s home and a series of foster homes.

A heightened interest in art deco design is taking hold these days, say a number of dealers. “As today’s collectors see art deco as the precursor of modern design, that element of historical importance makes for enormous appeal,” explains Fabien Mathivet, whose eponymous gallery is located on the Left Bank in Paris. Susan Weber, founder and director of the Bard Graduate Center in New York, says the style resonates on multiple levels.
