André Dignimont 1891-1965
Dignimont was born in Paris. He studied at the College Juilly, worked for a time in London, then returned to Paris to study at Académie Julian.
He was a very prolific artist and illustrator for more than four decades. His huge body of work solidifies Dignimont’s place in the tradition of uniquely Parisian art. His love of provocative women, cafe life, and the environs, documents a unique insight into the Parisian experience.
Dignimont was primarily a watercolor artist in the tradition of Jules Pascin. He incorporates pen and ink and washes of color that become very distinct as a style of his own.
Dignimont exhibited at Salon D’Automne, Salon de Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon de L’Araiguée. He also illustrated more than fifty books. He had a major exhibit in 1928 at Galerie Bernier in Paris. He exhibited often at Galerie Bernier and Galerie Charpentier.
Dignimont also designed for the Paris opera and the Comédie Française. He was awarded Chevallier de la Légion d’Honneur.
