Description

This is an original 19th century oil painting on canvas by Hermann Hendrich. It is his depiction of a sighting of the fabled ghost ship "The Flying Dutchman". Hendrich is known for painting mythical, mystical scenes with an eerie dreamy feel, mostly inspired by Wagner and other operas, German fairy tales, and sagas. He is true to form in this fine example, where a shadowy crew of shipwrecked men in a lifeboat catch a glimpse of the ghost ship "The Flying Dutchman" and beckon to it in false hope of rescue. The Dutchman almost seems to fade in and out of visibility as it melds with the roiling sea, spraying mist, and ominous clouds. The work is framed in an antique gilt wooden frame. Outside dimensions of the frame are about 49" wide by 37" high. Image within the frame is about 43" wide by 30 3/4" high. It is in very good antique condition with some minor waviness at the top right corner of the canvas, as shown.
